In advocating for a strength-based approach, I was not stating that one approach is superior to another approach. What I am advocating for is a balance or a more ecological approach in how we view and assess children and families. Assessing strengths of individuals tends to balance out the deficits and negatives that professionals tend to focus on. In our work with children and families we have anecdotal and qualitative data that indicates parents and children prefer a strength approach. Also, on our work with the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale we collected data indicated that the approach was a psychometrically sound scale. Whether it leads to better outcomes is another matter. As you pointed out, you have achieved success with using a strength and deficit approach in your own work. This would argue for a balanced approach. Continued success in your work. If you would like more information on the BERS please contact me.
