Carl, Glad to hear from you and that you have used the BERS and found it to be satisfactory. Your point about the value of strength-based assessment and the BERS in engaging and working with families is perhaps the biggest benefit. As you point out, families typically only hear the negatives about their children so the value of strength-based assessment is that it starts with and accentuates the positives. At the beginning families of childreen with significant behavioral challenges, particularly adolescents, have difficulty focusing on strengths. This is probably do to the many years of professionals focusing on the negatives or deficits. In these cases we have found it helpful to use more of an informal interview style addressing issues such as favorite family experiences, their child's friends, hobbies, interests, and goals and aspirations they have for their child and family. There are several open-ended questions on the BERS which are helpful. When you have further feedback on the BERS, please pass it along. Life in Nebraska has been excellent. Alice and I have made a great transition.
Mike
