Uses The psychometric characteristics of the BERS indicate that the instrument is a highly reliable and valid measure (Epstein & Sharma, 1998). The BERS has five specific uses: to identify the emotional and behavioral strengths of children; to identify children at-risk of experiencing problems because of less well developed strengths; to identify goals for an IEP or treatment plan; to assess improvement in a strength area as a result of services; and to serve as an outcome measure in research and evaluation projects. In the case study presented below we illustrate how the BERS is used for planning purposes in developing transition plans when a child moves from a more to a less restrictive setting.
